Simone Lacour, Abstract Composition (1962)
A striking experiment by Belgian artist Simone Lacour (1962), where smoke is used as a visual material. Soot forms a soft veil on the paper, combined with sharper lines in black ink. Chance and control brought together.

This 1962 Abstract Composition by Simone Lacour is executed in smoke and ink on paper. A remarkable experiment in which Lacour uses soot as a pictorial material. It forms a soft, atmospheric veil on the paper, combined with sharper lines drawn in black ink.
The combination brings chance and control together: the smoke can only be partially guided, while the drawn lines are deliberately placed.
Lacour’s work from this period places gesture, matter and chance at its centre, developing an abstract language that is intuitive and experimental, but always considered.
