This 1965 untitled work by Jozef Mees is built through broad, energetic brushstrokes and strong contrasts of colour. Deep blacks are interrupted by flashes of red, orange and white, creating a sense of movement and depth.
The thick application of paint gives the surface an almost sculptural quality. A fine example of Mees’s expressive approach to abstraction during the 1960s.
Jozef Mees belongs to the generation of Belgian artists who developed their own form of lyrical abstraction after the war. His work from this period forms a strong, yet today somewhat overlooked chapter in Belgian post-war painting.
